Finale

Today marked the end of a legacy, as Captain Captain Industries Presents : T-Shirt Time (the radio show) was broadcast exclusively by long-time host Patrick Duffy. Today was his final show before he heads to Oregon for an undetermined amount of time.

Here's a gift - from him.

Nate McMillan Plans to Use Rudy Fernandez Off the Bench

Blazers coach Nate McMillan told The Oregonian that he intends to use Rudy Fernandez as a rotation player off the bench.

The Breakdown
Rostering Fernandez this season seems like a big risk for fantasy owners. He told McMillan that he wants to return to Europe. The Blazers aren't letting him out of his contract, so he'll be forced to suit up for Portland this season. But Fernandez's displeasure could turn into a lack of effort on the court. Stay away from him in standard leagues. Deep leaguers should consider taking a gamble on him late as it could pay off if Fernandez puts his feelings aside and gives his full effort.

Magic's Jason Williams to Undergo Knee Surgery

Orlando Magic point guard Jason Williams is scheduled to have arthroscopic knee surgery on Thursday, which will sideline him 4 weeks.

The Breakdown
This ensures that Chris Duhon gets the minutes behind starter Jameer Nelson to begin the season. Williams may have to work his way back into the rotation when he returns, but this is something only owners in very deep leagues should follow.

Things should be a little different here around the industry. Especially if I snag one of those scarves.

Sixers Starting Line Up Taking Shape

Heading into training camp, Philadelphia 76ers coach Doug Collins has been going with the following as his starters:

Center: Spencer Hawes
Power Forward: Elton Brand
Small Forward: Thaddeus Young
Shooting Guard: Andre Iguodala
Point Guard: Jrue Holiday

The Breakdown
It appears that Evan Turner will have a bench role, but things could change as camp progresses. It was thought that Philly would start Brand at center, but obviously coach Collins doesn't want to give up so much size and is going with Hawes in the middle. If Hawes sticks in the starting line up, this increases his value going into the season.

We'll have to see how Turner is used throughout the preseason to get a better idea of what we can expect from him this season. Coming off the bench, though, is a clear blow to his fantasy value because it will be tough for him to get big minutes behind talented players like Iguodala and Young.

Competition Heats Up for Pacers Starting Power Forward Spot

With training camp underway, the competition for a the starting power forward spot in Indiana is heating up.

The Breakdown
Heading into camp, Tyler Hansbrough is the favorite to earn the starting role. He'll have to prove, though, that he's over the vertigo and ear problems he's dealt with over the last few months. Josh McRoberts, Solomon Jones, and Jeff Foster are also vying for that starting gig.

This is an interesting situation to watch as the man who comes out on top could get big minutes and be a nice fantasy contributor this year. With Hansbrough's injury problems last season, it may be a good idea to pick up Josh McRoberts in deeper leagues just in case Tyler sustains another injury. While Foster and Jones are in the mix, the likely starter will be either Hansbrough or McRoberts.

Byron Scott Plans to Use J.J. Hickson Alongside Antawn Jamison

Cavaliers coach Byron Scott told the Cleveland Plain Dealer that he intends to use Antawn Jamison at small forward more often in order to get J.J. Hickson more playing time at power forward.

The Breakdown
This report basically confirms that Cleveland will turn to Hickson for many of the minutes vacated by the departure of LeBron James. It's not a certainty that Hickson will be the opening day starter, but he should see an increase in minutes compared to last season. Hickson remains a great sleeper pick heading into the season.

Swag Week Finale - " 'Environmentally Aware Swaggin' "

This video is a perfect way to celebrate the finale of "Swag Week". Long-time friend Abigail Frerichs performs Switchfoot's 'Dare You To Move' in support of the re-building of the Lake Delhi Dam, which was destroyed on July 24th of this year.

I really need to start playing again. Songs like that are beyond inspiring.

Here's two brothers I went to school with. Their performance of Mayday Parade's 'Miserable at Best' is five minutes and twenty-four seconds of perfection.

I'm definitely feeling the guitar today. The weather's perfect, most of football has hit halftime, and Dexter doesn't start until later tonight. I'm gonna fill up the tank and drive somewhere and re-polish my acoustic "skills". (Note that 'skills' is in quotes...)

More posts later today, but I knew this was the right way to end Swag Week -- on a positive note.

Swag Week (Part VI, Vol. II) - 'Get Killed' Edition.

Tomorrow marks the beginning of the end, as Dexter returns to Showtime for the Season 5 premiere. As if that wasn't enough to get y'all pumped, the Captain's packin' gifts. Major spoiler alert.

F_cking. Immense.

Swag Week (Part VI) - College Gameday Edition

Ball State - 0 Iowa - 45

Captain Captain Industries will be closed for the remainder of today as a various illness has swept through the main office, getting the Captain in a tremendous funk.

Hey, at least Iowa bounced back after a (predictable) but never-the-less deflating defeat last week in Arizona. Even local backup QB James Vandenberg tossed one in for six. An easy victory is exactly what Iowa needed, as they prepare to rest their starters for next week's Big 10 kickoff against JoePa's Penn State.

I feel better already. *cough cough*
Well, not quite, but it certainly helped.

I'm off to eat some soup (Look at that picture. I want all of that. I swear, being sick is the equivalent of being mecca-stoned. Munchies galore.), drink loads of Canada Dry, and attempt to make an appearance at an anonymous Captain Captain Board Member's birthday bonfire -- except it's been raining all day. Just my luck.

Hornets Sign Jannero Pargo

The New Orleans Hornets have signed point guard Jannero Pargo to back up Chris Paul.

The Breakdown
The Hornets needed a proven point guard off the bench with only Mustafa Shakur as the only player on the roster who could play the point. This is a great signing for the Hornets considering Pargo had the best years of his career in his previous stint with New Orleans. Pargo looks like a good pick up in deep leagues.

Warriors Coach Don Nelson Resigns

Comcast SportsNet reports that Golden State Warriors coach Don Nelson has resigned. One of his assistants, Keith Smart, will take over coaching duties this season.

The Breakdown
Fantasy owners loved Nelson for running a high octane offense that produced fantasy goodness for anyone who played consistent minutes. Fantasy owners also hated him for being reluctant to play rookies, benching players randomly, and constantly changing his rotations.

Although Keith Smart worked under Nelson, it's no guarantee he'll continue what Nelson started. Smart may change the offense drastically and may use star players like Stephen Curry and Monta Ellis differently. We'll have to wait and see if the Warriors continue creating fantasy producers out of D-Leaguers.

Swag Week (Part V) - DJ Pauly D Edition

Dear established readers,

So, as it turns out, DJ Pauly D is going to have his own MTV spin-off, with his DJ skills being the primary focus. My money was on 'The Situation' getting a 'Flavor of Love' type of deal, but I guess MTV felt Paul DelVecchio would provide some better TV - can't necessarily argue there. Hopefully, Pauly steers clear of all of those Miami grenades in his quest to gym, tan, and do his laundry.

Guess it's finally time to Beat That Beat Up.

In addition, it's Homecoming Week in jolly Fairfield. Time to kick back, hang with a few Captain Captain Industry employees, and watch the class before me obliterate poor Chariton. Captain Captain Industries is about to light this town up. And maybe fist-pump in the process.

Have a sick weekend, y'all.

Swag Week (Part II, Vol. IV)

Swag Week continued today with Michelle Beadle and Colin Cowherd rolling by Iowa City today for their Big 10 SportsNation tour. The Captain's Lounge frequently has SportsNation on the television, and is proud to welcome ESPN to Iowa.

Bulls Sign Brian Scalabrine to Non-Guaranteed Deal

The Chicago Bulls signed Brian Scalabrine to a non-guaranteed deal so he could compete for a roster spot in training camp.

The Breakdown
With Carlos Boozer and Taj Gibson at power forward, Scalabrine figures to get very little playing time if he does end up making the team. His only chance for regular minutes appears to be if the Bulls decide to use him as Joakim Noah's back up at center. Even then, Scalabrine wouldn't figure to be much of a factor in fantasy next season.

The Debut of - The Olympics

Captain Captain Industries induct local cult-favorite indie group, The Olympics, into Swag Week.

These Cedar Rapids maestros drop some four-piece-madness on the world, one questionable venue at a time. I had the pleasure of seeing the group play a show in downtown Ottumwa of all places -- I'd advise getting real familiar with these cats very very soon.

Hit 'em up at their official website, or their MySpace account.

Wizards Don't Expect Josh Howard to be Ready Before December

Following Josh Howard's comment that he's be ready to play by November, the Washington Wizards that they don't expect the small forward back until December at the earliest.

The Breakdown
Howard's a nice player to pick up late in your draft if you can afford to hang onto him for a couple of months while he's out. It would be nice to have Josh return in November, but he'd likely be rushing back and could reinjure himself. He's probably looking at a return in late December or early January.

Ed Davis Out 6 Weeks

Toronto Raptors rookie Ed Davis will miss the next 6 weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on a torn miniscus in his right knee. Davis suffered the injury in a pick up game last week.

The Breakdown
This injury removes any chance that Davis will enter the season as a starter, as he'll miss all of training camp and the preseason. He could even potentially miss the start of the regualr season. Davis still remains a solid sleeper pick since he'll get an opportunity to play when he's 100 percent and he could force his way into the starting line up later in the season.

Andrew Bynum Could Miss Start of Regular Season

NBA.com reports that Andrew Bynum could miss the start of the regular season as he recovers from offseason knee surgery.

The Breakdown
The Lakers plan to limit Bynum in training camp. With their deep line up, they can afford to let Bynum sit until he's fully ready. If Bynum were to miss time, Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom would likely see extended minutes, with someone like Theo Ratliff or rookie Derrick Caracter getting some time off the bench.

Due to his injury history, it is going to be a real gamble selecting Bynum on draft day. He's likely going to enter the season injured and it'll be hard to tell when he'll be back. If you do indeed grab him, make sure you have reliable centers on your roster in case Bynum goes down with another long term injury.

Blake Griffin Playing Pick Up Games

NBA.com reports that Griffin has been playing in pick up games over the last month.

The Breakdown
This is encouraging news as the Clippers will head into training camp soon. Hopefully, Griffin doesn't suffer any setbacks before the start of the season. The Clippers will likely be cautious with him in camp, but as long as Griffin is on the court playing there doesn't appear to be any reason to shy away from him on draft day.

Pacers Sign Lance Allred for Training Camp

According to Yahoo! Sports, the Pacers have invited Lance Allred to compete for a roster spot in training camp.

The Breakdown
With the lack of experience in the frontcourt and injuries to Tyler Hansbrough and Josh McRoberts, Allred has a decent shot of making the team. Still, he'll likely be waived or end up at the back of the bench once everyone's healthy unless he really impresses.

Jawad Williams Accepts Cavaliers Qualifying Offer

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that Jawad Williams will accept the Cavaliers one-year qualifying offer.

The Breakdown
With a huge void at small forward in Cleveland, Williams will get an opportunity to play his way into the starting line up. Williams is an interesting sleeper candidate in deep leagues.

Swag Week

Swag --

The way in which you carry yourself. Swag is made up of your overall confidence, style, and demeanor. Swag can also be expanded to be the reputation of your overall swagger. You gain swag, or "swag up", by performing swag-worthy actions that improve this perception. A person can also "swag down," by being an overall p*ssy and garnering negative swag for their actions. Swag is a subtle thing that many strive to gain but few actually attain. Swag can also be quantified, with point systems existing in some circles of friends.

Captain Captain Industries will be closed today and tomorrow in recognition of Swag Week. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Hornets Agree to Terms with D.J. Strawberry

The Hornets have signed guard D.J. Strawberry.

The Breakdown
Strawberry will have to fight for a roster spot. If he's able to make the team, we don't see him having a much of a role. This means he won't help fantasy owners unless Marcus Thornton or Marco Belinelli suffers a long term injury.

Ed Davis Injures Knee in Scrimmage

The National Post reports that rookie Ed Davis injured his knee in a Thursday scrimmage. The Raptors are running tests to find out the severity of the injury.

The Breakdown
We hope this injury isn't too serious. Davis has a chance to become Toronto's starting power forward, but he'll need to be healthy and playing well throughout training camp and preseason to earn the nod over Amir Johnson. We'll post an update once we find out how long he'll be out.

Yao Ming to Play Limited Minutes All Season

According to the Houston Chronicle, Rockets trainer Keith Jones says that Yao Ming will be limited to 24 minutes a game for the entire season.

The Breakdown
If Yao is not going to crack 30 minutes a game, his value really drops. In addition, the Rockets are planning to keep Yao out of the second game of a back-to-back, at least in the early going. Things are not looking good for Yao returning as a top fantasy center.

With this news, we will have to reevaluate Yao's position in our Top 150 Rankings. With limited minutes and given the injury risk, Yao isn't worth a pick in the top 100 in this point. He'll likely fall to the latter stages of a standard league draft.

Marijuana Case Against Udonis Haslem Dropped

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that charges stemming for marijuana found in Udonis Haslem's car over the summer have been dropped.

The Breakdown
Due to the charges being dropped, Haslem won't face further punishment from the NBA. If he had been convicted, Haslem could have faced a possible suspension.

Heat Expects Mario Chalmers to be Ready for Start of Training Camp

The Miami Heat's Mario Chalmers appears to be healing from his ankle injury and should be ready for the start of training camp.

The Breakdown
With reports that Carlos Arroyo is still hurting due to a quad injury he suffered at the FIBA World Champtionships, Chalmers may come into camp as the lone healthy point guard on the roster. As we mentioned in a previous post, we felt that the player who could get healthy by the start of training camp would have the inside track on a starting spot. The longer Arroyo is sidelined, the better it looks like Chalmers will be the team's opening day starter.

Regardless of who starts, it seems they'll both play about the same amount of minutes. But the player who gets to start and spend most of their court time alongside LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh figures to get better scoring and assist opportunities then the one who comes off the bench, who may have to play a bit with the second unit.

Magic Round Out Roster with Signing of Malik Allen

The Orlando Magic has signed power forward Malik Allen.

The Breakdown
Allen will provide a veteran presence on the squad, but doesn't appear to be a player who will see regular minutes in the rotation with Rashard Lewis, Ryan Anderson, and Brandon Bass on the roster. He'll likely have little fantasy impact next season.

Raptors Sign Ronald Dupree Off Summer League Squad

The Toronto Raptors Have Signed Ronald Dupree to a non-guaranteed contract. Dupree played for the Raptors summer league squad in Las Vegas, averaging 10 points and 4 rebounds.

The Breakdown
Dupree has bounced around the NBA, D-League, and overseas. He'll still have to fight to make the roster, but we don't foresee him being much of a contributor if he's able to make the team.

Wednesday, September 15, 2010

Nets Ink Stephen Graham

The New Jersey Nets have signed swingman Stephen Graham to a two-year deal.

The Breakdown
With so many wings in New Jersey, Graham doesn't figure to see much playing time. He'll be at the end of the bench and isn't worth roster spot at this point.

Blazers Expect Joel Przybilla to Return in December

The Oregonian reports that the Portland Trailblazers expect center Joel Przybilla to return from his ruptured patella injury in either late November or early December. This would put his return about 20 games into the season.

The Breakdown
With Przybilla out and the uncertainty around Greg Oden's return, the Blazers will turn to Marcus Camby to play extended minutes early on. Once Przybilla comes back, he may end up being the odd man out if all the Portland big men are healthy. Oden, Camby, and LaMarcus Aldridge are a talented trio that will eat up all of the minutes in the frontcourt. At this point, I don't feel Przybilla is worth drafting in any leagues.

Tuesday, September 14, 2010

Bobcats Waive Erick Dampier

The Charlotte Bobcats have made the much anticipated move of waiving Erick Dampier after being unable to find a taker for his non-guaranteed contract.

The Breakdown
Dampier will certainly be picked up by another team, though his days of starting are likely over. Erick has shown he can still put up some good numbers in rebounds and blocks every once in a while. He just lacks consistency. You could get a 10 rebounds one night and then 1 or 2 the next. Still, he did played well last season before going down with a mysterious ailment. Dampier could end up being someone worth picking up in deeper leagues depending on the team he lands on. We'll be sure to provide analysis once a team signs him.

Tim Thomas Informs Mavericks He Won't Return Next Season

Tim Thomas, who signed a contract with the Dallas Mavericks after sitting out most of last season, has informed the team that he will be unable to honor his contract. Thomas had to care for his ill wife last season and it appears he will have to remain at home to care for his family.

The Breakdown
This is unfortunate news for Thomas, who wanted to get back on the court. The Mavericks will have to find someone else to back up Dirk Nowitzki. Whoever they add shouldn't be expected to provide much in terms of fantasy production with Nowitzki playing big minutes every night.
